**POWERS AND INDICES: Powers of a Number **

The power of a number is the number of times it is multiplied by itself. The value for the power is called the index. For a positive index the calculation is straightforward. However, when the index is negative the result is obtained by finding the reciprocal of the index.

For a negative index value the calculations are shown as a simplified fraction. If you are using a scientific calculator convert this fractional index into its equivalent decimal value.
